10 Questions to Ask Your Child About their ART!

This year we are going to be working on Art Discussions also known as Art Critiques in the classroom.  Students are going to learn how to look at a piece of artwork and relate to it as well as learn to ask how it's made, what type of media was used, what it reminds them of, what colors do they see and more importantly apply what they are learning in the classroom regarding the Elements of Art to things outside the classroom.

To help integrate what we are learning at home and to help develop critical thinking skills that can be used in other subject areas like Reading and Math.  These are some basic questions you can ask your child at home about their artwork.   As the year progresses I will add more detailed questions to our blog, but these are a great start.

10 Questions to Ask Your Child About Their Art

  1. Tell me about your picture?
  2. What types of materials or media did you use on your project?
  3. What inspired your idea?  Was it an artist of how you were feeling that day?
  4. Tell me your favorite part about your artwork?
  5. If you could give it a title what would it be and WHY?
  6. If you did this project again, what would you do differently?  What do you think you did right?
  7. What colors did you use?  Why?  (Encourage use of adjectives and art terms)
  8. What sounds would you hear if this were a picture?
  9. What elements of Art did you use in your project?  (Line, shape, color, value, form, texture, and space.)
  10. What interests you about this artwork?
Each of these questions helps develop your child's skills at questioning and learning to analyze artwork.  This is a great skill when asking your child to compare and contrast texts they read in class as well as may come across on the PARCC test.  Continue to encourage discussions about Art at home and watch how they grow with the support you give them along with your interest in their ideas.

Welcome!

Happy new school year!

Welcome to our new Art blog for the 2015-16 school year!

My name is Mrs. Holland and I am very excited to be working with all of the students here at Gower West.  My goal for this blog is to have a place in addition to Artsonia, where I can share what is taking place in the art room as well as other Art related news.

This way everyone can take a sneak peek at what our students are up to from grades K through 4th grade.   It's also a way to encourage asking questions about art work and even see some art work since some pieces do need to stay in the portfolios here at school until the end of the school year.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at sholland@gower62.com.
I'm looking forward to a great year!

Best,
Mrs. Holland
